"What Do I Do Now?" Conference 2010

For Parents and Educators of Asperger’s/High Functioning Autistic/Similar Students

Back to school time is stressful for our families and our teachers. Our kids are working hard to adjust to new classes and new teachers, and our teachers are working hard to adjust to our kids. Parents are trying to keep their kids happy and the teachers happy and to keep their own heads from exploding. Everyone has lots of questions and not enough answers. It's the perfect time to sit down with a bunch of autism experts and figure out where to go from there.

Designed specifically to address the difficulties our children have in the classroom and at home, our conference offers classes for parents of newly diagnosed children, more experienced parents, general education teachers and speech professionals for elementary, junior high and high school levels. Based on our highly successful monthly presentations, our conference will give participants knowledge they need to help our children succeed now and in the future.

Speakers will include Program Specialists from West End SELPA, experienced teachers from our local schools, Cassie Zupke and Edith Naranjo of Open Doors Now. (SELPAs are part of the state education system.  They're consultants to parents and school districts regarding the education of special needs children.)

Special Keynote speaker:  Author Barbara Hambly has touched pretty much all the bases in genre fiction, including mainstream historical fiction, historical murder mysteries, fantasy, science fiction, comic books, graphic novels, the occult romance novella “Someone Else’s Shadow”, and scripts for Saturday morning cartoon shows. She continues to write both fantasy and historical fiction: her upcoming vampire novel will be BLOOD MAIDENS (Severn House, 2011) and her most recent historical whodunnit, DEAD & BURIED, continues the well-reviewed Benjamin January series. She writes historical mysteries under her own name and that of Barbara Hamilton (THE NINTH DAUGHTER, and its upcoming sequel A MARKED MAN).   She currently teaches History part-time at Pierce College in Woodland Hills, and if you’re interested in her views on the weather, her cats, World of Warcraft, and sometimes writing, you can read her blog at barbara_hambly@livejournal.com. Hambly's interests include historical research, dance, hiking, costuming, Japanese, and videogames.
